Welcome to Building Kidz of Redwood City Preschool & Kindergarten

The City of Redwood City recognizes the importance of high-quality child care, and we know its residents do too. If you are one of the many parents still looking for the preeminent preschool or childcare on the Peninsula, Building Kidz has great news for you. We have been serving children and families in the Bay Area since 2003, and we are excited to introduce our 18th Bay Area campus, and our first in Redwood City. Our new campus is located at 909 Roosevelt Ave at the former location for Hawes Elementary School. What makes Building Kidz the leader in Bay Area early childhood education?

Parents of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners love our enhanced security measures, including video cameras throughout our classrooms and playgrounds, touch pad entry, and advanced parent communication provided by Brightwheel. If you are looking for a locally owned, community child care center that takes safety, security, and cleanliness seriously, look no further.

Safety is always our first priority, but it is most certainly not our last. Our curriculum is a comprehensive, interactive, and arts-integrated academic learning program. Your child will be coached as they develop skills in:

  • Math
  • Literacy
  • Self-regulation and control
  • Morality
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Emotional expression
  • Socialization

All while being surrounded by music and the arts and having fun!

Our curriculum is delivered by top-rate preschool teachers and committed support staff that has been dedicated to the Building Kidz mission for many years. They and we strive to deliver unparalleled care and education to local families and children.

Performing Arts is in Our DNA

Our specialization in performing arts goes beyond daily music, dance, and theater lessons and integration of the performing arts within our academic lessons. It includes two shows annually; Building Kidz of Redwood City children participate in a Broadway-style production in June and a winter recital in December.

Your Child will Learn to Love Learning

Our mission is to deliver a world-class infant care, childcare, preschool, and private kindergarten experience which results in children developing a deep passion for learning and connecting with the performing arts, while also demonstrating accelerated development of their confidence, commitment, and character.

Our philosophy is to develop the “whole child”. We focus on 6 key areas of development: emotional, social, cognitive, physical, communication, and academic. We create an environment where children are challenged intellectually and are engaged in an interest of lifelong learning through an intelligent integration of academics and performing arts.

Our philosophy, curriculum, integration of performing arts, professional staff, and our commitment to our community and its families is what makes us the preschool of choice for families in Redwood City.

If you are looking for a place where your child can grow to love learning, please visit us and see how our infant, toddler, and preschool program can give your child the best start possible.

Stephanie Lopez - School Director

Stephanie Lopez - School Director

Building Kidz of Redwood City

My name is Stephanie Lopez and I am excited to be your Director at Building Kidz of Redwood City!

I found my passion for dance and teaching children while growing up in Santa Cruz County. In 2014, I started my career in Early Childhood Education working as a dance teacher for Building Kidz of Mountain View. Soon, I realized working with young children gave me a sense of fulfillment so I decided to pursue my ECE degree while continuing my work with young children.

I have extensive experience running over 100 shows with Building Kidz across the Bay Area and in the industry. I love working with parents to ensure our team provides the best experience for our children. I will leverage my background as a Production Director and lead ECE teacher in my role as Director of Building Kidz of Redwood City.

As a Director, it is important to ensure and address all needs and make learning fun and exciting. I am committed to providing the highest quality preschool experience for our children within a stable, safe, and nurturing environment.

Please reach out or stop by anytime – I would love to meet you!

Elissa Calvin - Academic Director

Elissa Calvin - Academic Director

Building Kidz of Redwood City

My name is Elissa Calvin and I am thrilled to be a part of the Building Kidz team! Before working for Building Kidz, I worked for 18 years as an early childhood educator at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. Most of my experience there was as a preschool teacher, and for three of the years I worked as a nature science resource teacher.

I grew up in Massachusetts where I spent most of my time riding and caring for horses. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ithaca College in New York in English secondary education, and quickly realized that early childhood education was my true calling after moving to San Francisco. I received my Masters Degree in early childhood education in 2018, and my thesis was on how time spent in outdoor natural spaces helps children with their self-regulation.

Finding ways to help educators bring nature to children is one of my passions! I presented on integrating loose parts and natural materials in ECE classrooms at the 2019 Marin Child Care Council’s Striving for Excellence conference and The Children Learning in Nature Conference.

My first project at Building Kidz was to help update our infant toddler and preschool curriculums to reflect the latest trends in early childhood education. I also wrote the kindergarten curriculum for our schools.

As the Academic Director at Building Kidz of Redwood City, I work closely with Ms. Stephanie to ensure that all activities and projects happening in the infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms are inline with our progressive academic curriculum. I help train teachers to become familiar with the curriculum and how to implement it while also embracing their own creativity and passions. I am also responsible for creating an enticing and engaging outdoor learning environment for the children in our care.
I am looking forward to meeting you and your children!

We are always looking for great teachers!

What Parents Are Saying about the Building Kidz Schools…

I really love this school. It’s the right mix of play and school. My daughter started attending when she was 4 and I love how much she has learned!! She learned how to socialize with kids her own age and although a bit timid at times, I have watched her grow here! The teachers are awesome for her age group and they take the extra time to get to know each kid. She is now learning to read and she loves it. Oh and not to mention some pretty advanced math. She will do great this year as she enters kindergarten with the fantastic foundation she got here! I’m so grateful!!

This is our second time around with the Building Kidz, and happy to be back! My 2 year old started not too long ago and loves it even more than my oldest did, which makes morning drop-off very enjoyable! My oldest looks forward to accompanying me with afternoon pick-up and loves seeing all the familiar faces of the teachers and staff. The recent changes with office management have been a delight and I’m looking forward to the next few years with the Building Kidz.

We’ve had a really good experience there with our daughter.  We’ve really enjoyed the music and performance programs, the teachers are nice and care about the students, and they’ve been willing to work with us on a number of issues particular to our daughter.  They have really done a lot for us. The facilities are great, the playground area is really nice and completely enclosed.
